Reason Artists Create Sculptures 'Buddha Gus Dur'

VIVAnews - In order to commemorate the death of 40-day Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur, a number of artists held a cultural arts performances entitled 'Multitesisgusdurisme' featuring four statues Gus Dur.

Four statues on display is "Mount Gus Dur" Ismanto work, "President of the Nest Robber" by Samsudin, and "Gladiator Gus Dur" Jono's work, and "Mata Hati Gus Dur" Purnomo Cipto work - which reap tangible controversy since the Buddha's physique 'm meditating. The difference is, the face of the Buddha replaced Wahid faces complete with thick glasses.

The event was held at Studio Multisesigusdurisme Mendut initiated by artists and cultural experts Mendut Sutanto, Friday, February 5, 2010, yesterday.

Mendut Sutanto said that the activities to commemorate the death of 40-day Gus Dur. There is no intention to hurt any religious group.

Mendut Sutanto said that this concern for the artists in Magelang which is actually a stone carver to the late Gus Dur.

"Therefore, they created works of art depicting the figure of Gus Dur their way as a sculptor," he told VIVAnews, Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

If there are things that cause controversy, not the expected goals.

"We do not want to sully or taint any group Wahid figures. This could be a learning for us not to directly provide judgment. The essence of this activity is to symbolize the Gus Dur as the pluralist character accepted by any group not only Islam," he hoped .
